This modification of the well-known armored carrier BMP-2 was produced specially for the Limited contingent of the Soviet army in the Afghani republic. The guerilla character of the war revealed that BMPs were easily damaged by hand anti-tank weapons and mines of dushmans. BMP-2D got additional armor fastened to the hull with bolts. Besides, anti-mine ploughs were installed. The protection of the vehicle increased, but it lost its ability to swim.
