During the Russian campaign of 1812, the foundation of Russian army was the Line infantry. Soldiers were organized and bravely lead to battle by command groups, which were consisting of higher and non-commissioned officers. They were accompanied by standard-bearers and musicians. 'I was myself a witness to many staff and sub-officers who after receiving a couple of wounds dressed them, and returned to the battle as it was the feast' - wrote Nicolay Raevsky in his report. Russian army officers, who often didn't have a Russian origin (Barclay de Tolly and Bagration would be the most striking examples), fought for Russia with such passion and courage that were admired even by their enemies.
