The first siege towers appeared in Antiquity and were used until the Renaissance. They allowed one to climb the walls of the fortress under protection from arrows and stones. The wooden structure was additionally protected from fire by wet animal skins or metal sheets. A folding ladder was used to get onto the wall. The tower was set in motion by muscle power.
