The first Soviet submarine with a nuclear power system "Leninsky Komsomol" K-3 was launched in 1957. The submarine was equipped with common torpedoes and nuclear charged torpedoes. Unlike diesel submarines nuclear powered ones were able to travel under water for long distances and at greater speed than a common submarine. The K-3 became the first ship of the Russian fleet, which reached the North Pole and the first ship in the world, which surfaced at the North Pole.
