The Yak-1 was the first fighter developed by the Yakovlev Design Bureau and first flew on 13 January 1940. The aircraft had a mixed construction with wooden wing and tip, trussed fuselage made of steel tubes with canvas skin. The fighter was well armed with one 20 mm ShVAK cannon and two synchronised 7.62 mm SHKAS machine guns mounted above the engine. The Yak-1 was the most successful of the new pre-war generation of serial Soviet fighters (MiG-3, LaGG-3 and Yak-1), combining good flight data with ease of control. Yak-1 fighters fought on all Soviet fronts of  World War II, and made a significant contribution in the fight against the German Airforce and its allies during the most difficult period of the war.
